Making a difference: compassion in action.

When life becomes overwhelming, a compassionate presence can make all the difference. That’s exactly what Maureen, one of our incredible Emotional Support Volunteers with our Macmillan Beyond Diagnosis service, offered to Sue and her husband, Mike, during one of the most difficult chapters of their lives.

Sue was caring for Mike, who was approaching the end of his life. Mike was a proud man, devoted to his family, and found it difficult to accept help from anyone other than Sue. Meanwhile, Sue was struggling to keep up with his care needs while managing her own health concerns.

Working closely with Anett, Sue’s Cancer Support Coordinator, Maureen gently helped both Sue and Mike explore additional sources of support. Through patience and compassion, she was able to encourage Mike to accept more practical help, just in time to make his final weeks more comfortable. Thanks to this support, Mike received the right care and equipment, including a hospital bed, before it was too late.

Maureen’s involvement went far beyond emotional support. Over eleven sessions, she offered practical help such as driving Sue to appointments, meeting for coffee, and providing a listening ear when things felt overwhelming. She also helped Sue navigate other community resources and build confidence in accepting support from outside their family.

After Mike’s passing, Maureen continued to be there for Sue, offering comfort, sharing information about local services, and ensuring she felt supported as she adjusted to life after loss. Today, Sue feels more confident and no longer requires ongoing support, but she continues to speak highly of Maureen and the kindness she received.

It was a privilege to witness the care, sensitivity, and dedication that Maureen brought to this journey. Her ability to balance compassion with practical help made a world of difference for Sue and Mike when they needed it most.
