A simple act of kindness that helped one woman reclaim her joy.

We love celebrating the incredible work of our Beyond Diagnosis volunteers and the meaningful impact they have on the lives of those we support. Today, we’re shining a light on practical support, a vital part of our service that provides one-time or occasional assistance to people affected by cancer. Even small acts of support can make a world of difference during a challenging journey.

One such request came from Diana, a passionate gardener who once tended both an allotment and a beautiful garden. Gardening brought her immense joy, but as her mobility declined and she underwent treatments, keeping up with it became overwhelming. Despite her bright and bubbly personality and her constant willingness to help others, her overgrown garden left her feeling defeated.

That’s when Claire and Maureen, two dedicated Beyond Diagnosis volunteers, stepped in. Armed with gardening tools and a willingness to help, they got to work pruning back overgrown shrubs, tackling long grass, and uncovering Diana’s cherished rockery. They also cleared weeds and made the space more manageable, all while offering to return for another session to ensure the job was done right.

The result? Diana now calls it her “wonderful garden” and is overjoyed to have a space she loves once again. Thanks to Claire and Maureen’s kindness and hard work, she can now enjoy a beautiful, refreshed view from her window, bringing a little extra brightness to her days.
