Laura’s Incredible Run Fuels Vital Deaf Cancer Support

Today, we extend a massive congratulations and heartfelt thank you to our incredible volunteer, Laura, who conquered the Birmingham Half Marathon last Sunday! Her dedication and determination on the course are truly inspiring, and her efforts are making a real difference to the lives of deaf individuals affected by cancer.

Laura’s motivation for taking on this challenge is deeply personal. Her older brother has recently been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and is profoundly deaf. Like many others in the deaf community facing such a difficult diagnosis, Laura and her family have experienced firsthand the significant communication barriers and the lack of accessible information available in British Sign Language (BSL).

“It’s such a scary and unknown time for him,” Laura shared on her JustGiving page. “We have struggled with communication and finding where we can get information that is in BSL.” This experience highlights the urgent need for projects like our Deaf Cancer Support UK project, which works tirelessly to make crucial information accessible and provide a vital support network where deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals can connect and communicate openly.

Laura’s brother has directly benefited from the support offered by Deaf Cancer Support UK, reinforcing her commitment to fundraising for this essential project. Her incredible run has already raised a fantastic £1,356! This phenomenal amount will go directly towards expanding our services, creating more accessible resources, and raising crucial awareness about the lack of accessibility within the healthcare system for the deaf community.

Every step Laura took and every pound donated makes a real difference. It allows us to:

  • Develop and translate vital information into BSL.
  • Facilitate support groups where deaf individuals can share experiences and find understanding.
  • Advocate for greater accessibility within healthcare settings.
  • Provide a lifeline of support during an incredibly challenging time.

Laura’s inspiring effort underscores the power of individual action in driving meaningful change. Her commitment, combined with the generosity of her supporters, is helping us to bridge a critical gap in support for the deaf community affected by cancer.

You too can be a part of this vital work! If you would like to contribute and help us continue to expand our services, you can still donate via this link.

Thank you, Laura, and thank you to everyone who has supported her incredible fundraising effort. You are all truly amazing!
