Partnering with local initiatives to bring cancer support and awareness into the heart of the community

We’re incredibly grateful to Imran for recently inviting our Macmillan Beyond Diagnosis Team to spend time at The Open Kitchen, a vital community hub on Mansfield Road in Nottingham run in partnership with Muslim Hands UK.

The Open Kitchen provides free, hot, nutritious meals every day of the week to people experiencing homelessness, low-income families, and refugees. More than just a meal, it offers a warm, respectful, and inclusive space where everyone is welcomed with compassion.

Karen At The Open Kitchen on Mansfield Road, Nottingham

Rose and Karen from our team spent the morning volunteering, chatting with visitors, and offering support. During their visit, they connected with one individual affected by cancer – a powerful reminder of the importance of being present in spaces where people may not typically seek out support.

This visit marks the beginning of a wider outreach effort. We’re committed to reaching communities who may not come to us, particularly those from Black and Asian backgrounds, to raise awareness about cancer support and the importance of early screening. We’re proud to share that we’ve recently been awarded £130,000 to expand this work, with new team members joining soon to help increase cancer screening uptake across Nottinghamshire.

Imran has also invited us to visit his local mosque, where he volunteers, and we’re looking forward to continuing this partnership and exploring how we can support even more people in the community.

Let’s work together

If you’re part of a community group, faith centre, or organisation and have members affected by cancer – or if you’d like us to come and talk about cancer screening – we’d love to hear from you.

Contact: Rose Warren, Cancer Support Service Manager, on 07958 297 918.

Together, we can make sure everyone has access to the support and information they need – wherever they are, and whatever their background.
