Tandem Project – Derby
Self Help UK (formerly Self Help Nottingham) has been established for over 30 years providing training, development and support to self-help groups.
We have been funded by Southern Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group to develop a new befriending project in Derby. The Tandem Project offers a short-term befriending service for people living in Derby City who are affected by a long-term health condition and are experiencing social isolation.
How we help
The Tandem Project has trained volunteers who provide a befriending service to socially isolated people with a long-term health condition, living in Derby.
The Tandem service offers a range of support including:
- Visiting someone at home to build a trusting supportive relationship
- Offering support via the telephone
- Accompanying someone to self-help groups and social activities
- Accompanying someone to GP or Hospital appointments
- Supporting someone to access training or volunteering opportunities
We are looking for Befriending Volunteers to come and join our project. For more information on the role please see the role description.

Information for potential service users and referrers
The Tandem Project offers people living with a long term health condition who are experiencing loneliness and isolation, the chance to work with a trained volunteer to access opportunities in their community including social activities, support and self-help groups, educational activities (either formal or informal), training even volunteering and employment opportunities.
We will work closely with you to ensure that we offer you the support that you need.
All Tandem volunteers are trained and have completed a DBS criminal records check before being matched with a service user.
