Getting to Self Help Nottingham's offices on the second floor of Ormiston House
Ormiston House is a no-smoking building and smoking areas are not provided.
At present there are two sets of double glass doors at the entrance but under the Disability Discrimination Act it is hoped that these will be altered to give better access. In both instances only one of the double doors is in use.
The width of the opening to the first set of doors is 780mm. Once through these there is an intercom at wheelchair height on the left. Press B or the Braille button to alert Self Help Nottingham that you have arrived. It’s not obvious that the intercom has worked as there’s no sound in the foyer, but it does ring in the office. The intercom will be answered and once your identity has been ascertained the lock on the door will be released to allow you entrance. A buzzer noise will sound to indicate that you can pull the door towards you. The width of this doorway is 710mm. If you require help please press the buzzer three times and somebody will come down to assist you.
On leaving the building this door can be opened via a small knob at standing shoulder height. This should be turned in a clockwise movement.
If you find that you require assistance to gain access either push the buzzer consecutively for three times or request assistance when the intercom is answered.
Once in the building access is via the stairs or lift to the second floor. The lift is straight in front on the left and the stairs are on the right. There is a handrail on the left along the wall to the lift and the floor is slightly sloped. The stairs are situated on the right of this walkway with an area for bikes and scooters under the stairs.
Lift
The lift is regularly maintained, but still requires care when entering or leaving.
The button in the lobby for calling the lift is on the right at 1070mm and includes Braille.
Wheelchair users will find entry to the lift is easier if negotiated in reverse and this will put you in the right position for reaching the lower set of lift buttons. The entrance to the lift is 780mm wide. Once in the lift there are two sets of buttons for operating the mechanism. One set is at standing shoulder height on the left and a lower set, accessible to wheelchair users, is situated on the right. The lower set of buttons indicates the floor number in Arabic numerals as well as Braille.
The lift isn't big enough to take scooters, but these may be parked on the ground floor by the bike racks. Anything left in the lobby must not impede the progress of anyone walking to and from the lift and is left at the owner's risk.
Stairs
There are 24 stairs some of them open stairs, up to the first floor with a half landing near the top. At the top of the main staircase turn 180 degrees right and take the door on your left. This leads up a back staircase to the second floor. There are a further 25 stairs with half landings and turns to the left. On reaching the second floor there are two doors to negotiate before arriving at Self Help Nottingham.
